Roles that we play

We all wear many hats in a day.
Friend, student, sibling, employee, artist, cook. parent. boss.
Along with that is labels that we either put on ourselves or that others may put on us:
Fun, quiet, self assured, loud, needy, messy. troublemaker.
Some roles that we find ourselves in are situational and deliberate such as parent, employee, sibling whereas others seem to happen regardless of our intention…leader, caretaker, organizer, follower, troublemaker. Within all of these roles are emotions and actions that seem to follow. For example, as adults, how many of us still revert back to childhood emotions when faced with certain situations? Sibling rivalry and friction with parents to name a few.

This all came up for me as my daughter is reaching adulthood. We both find ourselves changing but also find ourselves expecting or reacting in the ‘old’ ways vs the adult relationship we want.
We all play roles or wear hats with different people, groups and situations. You’re not the same ‘you’ at work in a meeting with your boss as you are when you’re playing darts with your friends over a beer. There are many different sides to us but is that the same thing? And how does it all merge into your authentic self? Or do we live as pieces of ourselves, shoes that we put on for different occasions?
More importantly, how does the role we play affect our outcome and happiness?
AND
How does the role we choose to play affect others in our life?
Thinking back to the reference of my daughter and our relationship…I’m not going to go deep on whether it’s healthy or not but is it a space that we can both grow in and be our best selves? IE be happy?
Food for thought.
